I'm sitting here

in a tiny little room with the computer on the table, plugged in to the wall and Angus is lying on the flor beside me playing with some library books while the girls are happily watching, you guessed it, Play School. I hang out for this time of day, I really do. It's half an hour of peace, except if Angus is crying.

It's pretty damn hot again today I must say. I wasn't quite expecting it as last night it started to get cooler and I just figured it would follow that path. Still not used to Victorian weather.

I just made THE most successful dinner ever. Both girls basically inhaled it. Tabitha did a magnificent job of maneuvring her fork too. She has been trying to feed herself for quite some time. It started out with a spoon, then when she saw Lexi had a fork she wanted one too. Who am I to stand in the way of progress, so I gave her one. Well, now she uses it almost as well as Lexi and I am massively impressed. So they cleaned up their chicken wings (BBQ plum marinaded) which were served with a partially healthy side of cabbage and bacon. I only made cabbage and bacon because I have heard people talk about it on that many occasions and tonight I found myself in the situation where I had both cabbage and bacon in the fridge and I thought bugger it, I'm gonna try it. So I did. It rocks. It will be tried again.

I'm doing my essay tonight. Just you watch. I will make a valiant effort at a decent start. I don't know which of the two it will be, but it will be one of them. Actually I think I might start the one I haven't started yet. Still need to do all the research for it and request the relevant books from the library, so methinks that is tonight's job. And I might play a game of poker. Just for the hell of it.

Last night I watched Idol which was fine, but the thing is I wasn't expecting it to be on the tv. Not the tv full stop but the tv I was watching. I was actually intending on watching one of the crappiest reality tv shows ever, entitled "The world's next great baker" or something equally clever. It is hosted by Buddy whoeverheis from Cake Boss and is possibly the most grammatically incorrect show I have ever watched. But it's still a cooking show and I love them so what can you do.

The half hour is drawing to a close and Angus is cheekily grinning at me as if to say "mum....you know what I want don't you......". And yes, I do. So I'd better go feed him. Toodle pip for now.

So technically

if you look at the nuts and bolts of it, I have in fact started. I did my mega library search online last night and requested a bazillion books for this assignment so hopefully they'll arrive soon. And I also found a few articles. All things go.

This morning the girls were trying to outfart each other. All I can say is thank god they had nappies on because there was real effort going into some of them, and a shart was almost inevitable. Angus joined in by blowing raspberries. Ah yes, the joys of motherhood.

I had plans for the day that are now no longer because what I assumed was going to be the situation is not the situation and thus I am left with a different situation which is not that which I thought would occur. Stupid to assume stuff, I think I've mentioned that before.

I had bruschetta for breakfast this morning. Well, povvo bruschetta. Tomatoes, diced spanish onion on toast with a splash of balsamic and olive oil. It was actually pretty good. I didn't however really think it through because now all I can taste is onion, and onion first thing in the morning is not really ideal, particularly when you don't have any red bull. Why that is the case I don't know but I feel like a red bull now. Did you know that if your breath smells like garlic and you eat parsley it will counteract the smell? That's my useless fact for the day. And if you learn something every day, and you didn't know this particular fact, you have now learned your thing for the day, so you don't need to pay attention anymore.

Angus has been trying to eat his swing. I'm thinking teething is happening. Either that or he is displaying talents that may see him team up with Stevie Starr in the future. Who knows. I'm still waiting for the remainder of Tabitha's teeth to show up.

Lexi fell out of bed several times again last night. Reeeally need to get her into a proper bed with guard rail, so I'm trying to rush this whole rental business thing through. I would love to be able to get settled sooner rather than later.

Play school is on, that's why I'm able to blog now. The girls love Play School. I love it too. Educational, gets them up and dancing and doing actions, and it gives me half an hour to do whatever I want. That's gotta be good. Even better if Angus is asleep, which he currently is, sitting in the swing as it plays the mockingbird song. And if that mocking bird don't sing, mumma's gonna buy you a diamond ring. Apparently that song goes for ages and there are heaps of verses. I can never remember past the diamond ring thing. I might google it.

Ok so due the wonders of time lapse photography (or in this case me looking while not typing) I bring you the lyrics to the mocking bird rhyme.

Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
If that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
If that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat.
If that billy goat won't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
If that dog named Rover won't bark.
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart.
If that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.
So hush little baby don't you cry,
'Cause Daddy loves you and so do I.

And now you have learned two things today, so that frees up your tomorrow. Oh yeah. That's the way.

Just in case you were wondering

I still haven't started.

That is all.

Procrastination

is a funny thing. I have two essays that require my attention in the fairly immediate future. I have, shall we say, a fairly low inclination to get to work on these essays. So I'm procrastinating. How am I doing this? The dining table is full of washing. Five loads all folded. So essentially, while I'm procrastinating, I'm actually doing the things I was procrastinating about doing the other day. So essentially procrastination is really all about doing things you need to do because they are better than the alternative. Or something like that. I did also watch the last half of American Idol, and because I missed the first half am very tempted to go to Fox 8 +2 in 33 minutes and watch the first half.

The last fellow that sang was a funny looking guy. His name was Casey Abrams (not sure of the spelling but you get the gist) and he was 19. He also had odd looking curly hair and a very thick unkempt beard, a melodica (which is like a mini piano keyboard you blow into), and a fairly casual sense of dress. So that's drawn you a picture.

He blows into the melodica to get his note. And what follows is nothing short of amazing. I have heard singers before, and I have been impressed. Last year Adam Lambert blew me away with his ability to hit high notes with a strength to rival any other, and a beautiful tone to boot. Bit of an odd one, but that added to his charisma. He's now doing great things, as I'm sure you've heard on the radio. A little bit more commercial than I would have liked to see, but, well, you gotta pay the bills hey.

Anyway, old mate on the telly tonight, he was nothing short of amazing. Never before have I seen someone open their mouth and actually see the music flow. He didn't try to sing, he just sang. And what came out of his mouth was pure joy. I am very excited to see what he does in the future. Very excited. And thus commences the addiction to another reality tv show. As simple as that.

Ah the joys.

Some time ago

Lexi had a toy. And it played a tune, a tune which I knew but for the life of me could not work out what that tune was. I just wanted to let you know that I still do not what that tune is, and I fear I never will.

Today has been probably one of the longest days of my life. I've been waiting to hear what's happening up north and how my friends and loved one have been affected by it all. It appears that thus far things are okay. But it still doesn't stop me worrying. And when people say "don't worry" what do you do? Do you instantly say oh ok then no problems I will, thanks for that, I would never have thought NOT to worry, what a brilliant idea. No. I don't think so. You keep worrying because you don't know what is going on. And that my friends is the human frailty. But I will take it because it means that I have people that I care about and WANT to worry about.

I learned a few things today. I think I actually learn something every day. Isn't there a saying, "learn something new every day"? There is. I know there is, cos I use it all the time.

Anyway, one key thing I learned today is that in very dim light, toy soldiers look very much like spiders. Large spiders. I also learned that flyspray does nothing to toy soldiers except make them wet.

I'm trying to decide upon an essay topic. They gave us three from which to choose. I have A, B or C. I am thinking B is out of the question because frankly it is boring. B for boring. A has some scope to it, but C, well, it looks the easiest and to be perfectly honest with you easy is welcome with me right about now. So I think it's gonna be C. Will have to start that tomorrow though because my brain is fried tonight from worry and not sleeping.

Tabitha cut her first canine today. Finally. She has been teething for about 2 years now. And she's 18 months old. Seriously though it seems like forever. And thankfully one has broken through. Judging by her temperament today the others are not far off. Fingers crossed. I'll be glad to get her to sleep through again.

Lexi fell out of bed twice tonight. Already. From the huge height of 5 or so inches. Still, not nice.

Can't wait to get into a place that is ours and that we can set up to be ours and get into some sort of routine again. I find it difficult to live the nomadic life. Many years ago I yearned for it, and loved it. Now, with three kids in tow, it is less appealing. I want security. I want routine. I want my kids to be happy, and that about sums it up.

I am going to try and sleep. Try is the operative word because there are so many things going through my mind at the moment the traffic rivals the London Subway at peak hour.

Take care all, and by that I mean Queenslanders. You've copped a veritable schlacking. You deserve a break. Please Yasi don't take any Queenslanders, they have been through enough.

I love mother nature

I really do. But seriously, sometimes, I think wtf is going on??

There is a bird. It is a sparrow, or something sparrowesque. And it just keeps on bashing against the window. Granted there is light behind the window and it is dark outside but for crying out loud bird, if you couldn't get through the glass the first time odds are you aren't going to get through it the next time, or the next time, or the next time.

Maybe it is a velociraptor reborn. They test for every sign of weakness. Tabitha is a velociraptor. She keeps testing things till finally she sees the point of weakness then she goes for it. Like that one time you forget to snib the door, and next thing you hear footsteps running up and down the veranda. Or the time you forget to shut the toilet door and you hear the sounds of the toilet brush and a gleeful Tabitha playing with same. Joyous.

She will always test for weakness.

Agh I should be in bed. But I'm worried still about the cyclone so googling (bad idea, google is actually the devil in case you wondered). But I'm struggling to keep my eyes open. The only things keeping them open is the incessant bashing of that idiot bird against the window. So I figure if I go to bed and turn the light off maybe stupid bird will stop trying to shorten its beak.

We shall see hey.

Much of what you hear

today will have been about one of two things, depending where you live. If you are in Queensland (or have loved ones there as I do) then your discussions will have been heavily focused on Yasi and the terror it appears will be caused by this mass of whirling cloud and chaos. If you live in Victoria it will have been about the third day in a row of phenomenal heat.

Usually when people talk about the weather it is merely small talk. "Oh hasn't it been hot lately". "Yes, yes it has." (when in their minds they are thinking hmmm I really have nothing to talk about with this person so what is something innocuous that won't inspire a debate that I'm really not prepared or interested in entering into - oh yes, the weather, that'll do). Today however any talk of the weather involves people actually taking a keen interest in it. What is Yasi doing? Is it moving northwards still, or is it veering back down south? Information pages are popping up on facebook and links to press conferences dot the news feed. Everyone wants to know, because six degrees of separation everyone knows someone who in one way or another will be affected.

The floods were one thing. One huge, massive, horrid thing. Cyclone Anthony was another thing, a category 2 thing. And now Yasi has to get his 2 cents worth in. They say it goes in threes. Theoretically this should be it for poor battered Queensland.

And so my thoughts are never far away from Mackay and my loved ones (or one to be precise), however I and the kids are here. And we carry on with our lives because the kids have no inkling as to what's going on up there, and mummy will just keep that to herself because they don't need to know and quite simply they just wouldn't understand.

Here, today, was a mummy's dream day. It was very very hot, and very windy. It was, as you mummy's out there will relate to, a "perfect drying day". Who knew that that phrase would ever become part of my vocabulary?? So of course I did the mum thing and stripped all the beds and washed all the towels and by 9 am I had 3 loads of washing done and two hung out. I was on fire.

As always I learned some lessons today.

1. If it is a perfect drying day that involves wind, leaving the empty laundry basket underneath the clothes line is not a good idea when you are living on a property.

2. It is excellent exercise to go searching for a missing laundry basket in 39 degree heat as you build up a good sweat.

3. Much as a bucket of clothes pegs may LOOK heavy, strong winds do have the ability to upend said bucket and spread pegs remarkably far.

4. On "perfect drying days" you need more than 2 pegs to hold a sheet to the clothes line.

5. The 10 second rule applies to sheets that have flown off the clothes line.

I'm off to start another essay because I am quite obviously a glutton for punishment.

If you find yourself in the path of Yasi, my thoughts are with you. And will continue to be until he (or she, I haven't quite worked that one out yet) has dissipated into a mere cough of a breeze inland.

And may all your children sleep through. Amen.
