Yesterday was enormous

From the outset of the day it really just didn't stop. As soon as I had given the girls breakfast, I quickly dived into the shower as Angus was asleep (he'd already done the been up and gone back down thing by that stage), then Lexi and I made a loaf of bread in the breadmaker. If ever you think that a wide mouthed jug is a good way to measure water when making bread with a 2 1/2 year old, rethink it. So after I mopped the floor and got everyone changed we finished measuring out everything we needed and got the bread in the breadmaker.

Then it was chocolate crackle o'clock. The recipe says it makes 24. Be advised that if you buy muffin cases instead of patty pans you can change this number to 12. Now chocolate crackles are a huge hit with kids, but making them is also a hit. Unfortunately sometimes children don't really listen. Other children may listen a little more, but Lexi, when she's in the zone, just wants to do what Lexi wants to do, and no amount of my telling her not to will change her mind with what she wants to do. So when she took a bite of the copha..... well, let's just say she didn't do that again. We had rice bubbles flying and coconut flipping and icing sugar floating through the air and things seemed to be going well. The copha was on the stove slowly melting, as per the instructions, and the last thing we needed to add prior to the copha was cocoa. Now cocoa looks a great deal more appetising than it actually is, so you can imagine the look on Lexi's face as she put the entire teaspoon full of cocoa straight into her mouth. And again, if you had have listened to mummy.......

So once we washed the cocoa off everything, didn't bother to change outfits again just yet, and had a nice big drink of water to dissolve the cocoa from everywhere inside Lexi's mouth, the mixture was spooned into the muffin cases and the tears began as I whipped them off the table to put into the fridge, all the while explaining that unless they were set she would not be able to eat them. Sometimes, well, you talk and talk and can literally see your words go in one ear and out the other.

And then mummy whisked off to a baby shower, which was lovely. Some kid free time catching up with grown ups. And talking about babies. There is no escape. And so when I got home, everything was waiting for me, and I was basically just a few hours out of my routine, which meant I had to go like a bat out of hell to get everything done. Not saying that nothing was done while I was gone, just not the order I would have done it in (I usually bath Angus in the arvo to save having to bath three kids at night). Anyway, it was lovely to get away, and I amazed myself by just how much I could get done in such a short space of time when I got home.

Burps are funny. Hilarious in fact. So when Angus does a good burp, and I tell him he's a good boy, Lexi comes over and tells him he is a good boy and Tabitha looks at me and laughs and makes mock burp noises. This in turn starts Lexi making mock burp noises and laughing and before you know it the room is filled with sounds of burps and laughter. It's quite contagious. The laughter, not the burps.

Lexi, as I have mentioned, is somewhat of a helper. When plates and bowls and cups are finished with she puts them in the sink. What she doesn't seem to grasp is the "finished" concept. She sees an empty plate and instantly there it goes, never mind that this plate is empty because you have sandwich in hand and are taking a bite of it. Ah well, too slow. We need to be ever mindful of the placing of coffee and water cups too, lest they be whipped away when not quite empty.

The stereo sounds of mummy are reverberating through the house so I had best see if I can get some elaboration as to the mummy....wish me luck....so often the days are filled with incessant ramblings of mummy mummy mummy mummy and then a bit of laughter and some more mummy mummy while I go insane trying not to lose it because I get no further than mummy mummy mummy.

I had KFC for dinner last night. With ranch dressing. Consequently breakfast this morning was KFC with ranch dressing, and a Red Bull. Just so you know, 99% fat free ranch dressing is nowhere NEAR as satisfying as the full o' fat stuff. Lesson learned, and mistake will not be made again.

I hear velcro. It's nappy velcro. I must go and I must go now.

If you accidentally step on a frog

when quietly walking around the house at 2.30am be aware that this frog wil neither say der-gloomph nor la di da di da, even though the song tells us that it is so. Rather it will make a sound like a very large and angry cricket, after which time it will hide and reappear right beside your head on a wall approximately 15 minutes later just to get back at you for accidentally stepping on it.

At least the rain has stopped. This is what our road looks like......

I do hope that it settles down a little though as later on today I am meant to be driving along the river that is currently in place of the road. I'm going to "high tea". I have gone to high tea once before when I was on holiday in Canada. The high tea there consisted of tea (funnily enough) and coffee, as well as lots of gorgeous little cakes, all decked out like presents. I'm wondering what an Australian high tea will be like. Mick reckons high tea is "casual clothes day for food". He's probably not too wrong there. Cute way of thinking about it.

Food is a very important part of my life. I don't sit and eat all day, nor do I actually eat huge amounts of food, but there are certain foods (such as, oh, I don't know, just to pick one at random, KFC) that just make me happy, and every time I think about them I smile. Roast lamb is another, but it has to include pumpkin and gravy. And mint jelly. Yum. Roast pork is another cracker as well although to be honest I would gladly forgo the roast and just eat the crackling. I have actually done that before (shame shame). I bought a pigskin from the butcher and cracklised it, then proceeded to eat it. Entirely. Needless to say I was required to drink copious amounts of hot water in order to relieve the pain of what was obviously congealed fat setting in my stomach. Charming visual that....

It's 6.54am and I just heard a knock, which I thought was at the door. It wasn't, it was the window. It was Mick. He was holding a pigeon. The rats of the sky. He seemed very proud that he'd caught one, and wanted to show it to Lexi. So he showed Lexi, put the bird down and it flew away. Random.

I just had a Red Bull. I did need it. Thankfully mini dude was only up the once last night but it was a rather extended upness so I'm a bit tired. Once I have been awake for over 45 minutes or so I have a little trouble falling back to sleep. I try all those relaxation techniques but they don't work. It's more a case of just lying there, thinking about stuff until the stuff you're thinking about starts to take on a different point of view, and it is at that point, the point where the mind starts becoming creative without conscious thought, that I usually fall asleep.

I'm very glad that essay is done, and should probably make a start on the next one, but I have to get a few Christmasy bits and bobs organised this morning, and then the high tea this arvo (minus kids, I'm going to be a real grown up!) so perhaps it may not get started until tomorrow. I have just under 2 weeks so there is, technically, still a fair amount of time.

I must away, mini me is doing her impersonation of an octopus and has just grabbed the last of the cheese and bacon rolls (which I thought was hidden enough away that I could quickly scoff it down while they were watching play school or something this morning). Lexi has a built in food radar. And her hearing. My gosh, she could hear a chip packet opening from 200 metres away! On that note I  shall rescue the breakfast from Tabitha. She has a habit of, when she has had enough, just reaching her hand over the side of the tray and dropping it on the ground. Lexi, the good girl she is, tries to help clean up. I have a photo to demonstrate...and shall leave you on that note.....

I did feel slightly bad

for mr grocery man. After all, it's been raining pretty flat knacker here for some time, with a few thunderstorms thrown in for good measure. So when I saw him pull up in the driveway with a perplexed look on his face I thought it best to go out and meet him, just so he didn't have a stroke trying to work out how to cross what was essentially a lake in order to get to the front door.

As it happened he left the groceries on the truck that was parked at the other side of the lake and I made a hasty phone call and Mick came to the rescue, acting as the ferry, bringing me the mobile eftpos, taking it back to mr grocery man, who I think we shall call Rupert, just because, and the story goes on. He then acted as ferryman to bring over the groceries, which had, in transit, somehow managed to spread the contents of one of the iced coffees over everything, such that the whole house, foyer, children and myself smell like coffee. I guess there are worse things to smell like.

I must admit to a supreme lack of control. I spotted the Red Bull almost instantaneously and before the bag had even reached the table I had stealthily reached through the tied bag, removed one of the cans from the four pack, heard that most satisfying of sounds as I opened it and skulled it in record time, letting out a supreme "aaaaah" sound upon completion. Tabitha does this after she has a drink too....can't imagine where she got that from.....

So I'm searching through the groceries, checking them off with the little list. The disappointing thing is the iced coffee that spilled was not even on my order - it was a mistake that they had put in instead of a different sort of iced coffee. So one wonders whether or not I would still have the aroma permeating throughout everything should the packer have done their job properly....hmmm..... I also received scourers. I did order scourers. I ordered those fandangled little non scratch gentle scourers, an oxymoron if ever there was one. I received heavy duty mega serious scourers. So basically the opposite. Anyway, gave them a buzz, they credited the account back. No harm done, except I now have no gentle scourers and one less iced coffee. It was for Mick anyway.....and there were already a couple in the fridge....so I don't feel so bad.

I finished the first of my essays (cheesy grin and self pat on back). Not too unhappy with it either. Hopefully it'll do okay. I did very well on my first subject which was electronic crime, and this one is law and the internet so I'm hoping to do well there also so that I can make it my "major" so to speak. After all, the internet is becoming rather popular these days isn't it.....so I've heard.....

Poor little mini dude has had a shocking arvo. He lulled me into a false sense of security with his calm before the storm having one of his longest ever day sleeps. Upon awakening he had a lovely relaxing bath and then proceeded to scream at the top of his lungs for the next hour. It's so difficult to feel their whole bodies shuddering and shaking, and hear them cry themselves hoarse whilst we work out what it is that is upsetting them so much. I was fairly sure it was a windy issue so I just kept patting and patting and bouncing and jiggling and swinging and bicycle legging and he let out three enormous burps. I was rapt. But it wasn't over. There was still over half an hour more screaming to go....and I think he still isn't finished to be honest but just tuckered himself out so much he fell asleep. All I could say was "don't be sad". I hate him being sad. It seriously does break my heart. Every tear that falls down his cheek I hold a thousand in my heart for him. I would love for him to wake and be back to his normal little self. The most calming child on the face of the planet. Absolutely amazing.

Oh his little Christmas tshirt arrived too I think I mentioned and I did say I would upload a photo....so here it is......and one of him with his gorgeous older sisters.....my beautiful little family. Who could ask for more.

Nice weather

for ducks. I never quite understood that saying. Yes, ducks swim, but why is it that they must love the rain? If I were a duck, which quite obviously I'm not, I don't think I would like swimming out in the rain at all. I'd forever have my head tucked under my wing, as you see them do, and wouldn't be getting a lot of swimming done at all. A nice sunny day on a still lake, well, as a duck THAT would be my kind of day.

We've had a lot of rain here this wet season, and it looks like more to come. The last 24 hours it's been thunder city. Thunderbolts and lightning, very very frightening me Gallileo Gallileo. Sorry, went a bit Wayne's World there.

Just a word of warning - if ever at night you are just a bit too tired to pack up the toys the kids have left out resist the urge to say to yourself it's okay I'll do it tomorrow. Take that five minutes and clean them up then and there, because the star from a Tupperware shape-o ball is very unforgiving at 2.30am.

I wonder if mr grocery delivery man is going to be able to get here. It seems to be that every day I have a grocery delivery scheduled it is literally bucketing down. Perhaps it knows? Or maybe it's just cos it's wet season. Either or, I feel sorry for the delivery man. Last time's fellow was game...he actually jogged up to the front stairs across the grass holding the box of groceries. I could almost see him going for a full on slip and slide and wearing the things he was carrying. It didn't happen, but my mind saw it. In fact my mind had a bit of a chuckle at the sight of it, but it's okay cos in my mind he also didn't hurt himself.

I'm on day 2 of no Coke. Sad thing is when I woke up this morning I laid in bed for a second and thought Coke, no, I've given it up, lucky I have Red Bull. And it was then that it hit me that the Red Bull is on the grocery order for today. So I don't actually have any. Yet. But I will. Later. So I'm on my third coffee.

It is my goal to get this essay completed today. I must I must I must. It isn't due for a few weeks but there is another essay due on the same day, as I believe I have mentioned, which is so lacking in words it may as well be mute.

Chocolate crackles this arvo, and I might even make a loaf of bread too. I still need to find a pumpkin bread recipe. Or raisin bread. I wonder if I can make my own raisin bread....surely I can. I don't like raisin bread. Well, I do, but not the raisins. Kind of defeats the purpose. I like the spicy cinnamony kind of taste the bread itself has, just not the squishiness of the raisins. It is much like Garfield. I picture the cartoon where Jon Arbuckle, in one of the squares, says Garfield loves his raisin toast, I've been giving it to him for breakfast every day for 2 years. And he goes over to Garfield who has a drawer open full of little dots and Jon asks him what it is and he answers that it is 2 years' worth of raisins. There was a point to that. Oh yes, I don't like raisins in raisin bread.

Angus's little Christmas tshirt arrived yesterday. Some lovely friends from kiwiland sent over some outfits for Angus when he was born that were personalised, and I loaded a photograph up on to the facebook site of the company that made them and he won a tshirt!!! It's pretty cute. I'll make sure I take a photograph.

Must away, noiselessness. Disturbing. Always makes you wonder.....and there is always reason to wonder....

You know you live in far north Queensland

when you go to bed at night, say for example last night, just to pick any night at random, and you hear a little noise and you think hmmm what might that be and so you go and get a torch to try and source the origin of the little sound and you realise that there is a frog in your bed. Note to self, frogs do not like to be lit up by torchlight whilst trying to be captured. Nor do they like being flung out the front door at speed. I figure they bounce everywhere anyway, it'll just be the biggest bounce of his life.

I gave the girls rice for dinner tonight. As Mitch Hedberg once said, rice is great when you're hungry and want 2000 of something. I love rice. Lexi adores rice. Tabitha can take or leave it. Most of the time she'll leave it. At least she is having a red hot go lately though. She's pretty ordinary with the spoon so most of the time it's fingers in at the ready. And rice, well, rice sticks. To everything. By the end of dinner between Lexi and Tabitha it looked as though it had been snowing. Which was nice actually, what with Christmas coming up and all. Less nice to clean up, but if you do spill rice you must must must clean it up straight away, for once it dries there is no substance harder. Except perhaps baby fingernails...they'll cut through glass...

My first day of Cokelessness went a lot better than anticipated. I only had one and a bit coffees too. That was more bad luck than bad management though...I microwaved one maybe half a dozen times but something always happened that drew me away from the lure of the caffeine. I have had a few glasses of water too, and some pineapple juice. So I'm doing okay. I think tomorrow will be a little more difficult.

I have my online grocery order arriving tomorrow. My how I love online grocery shopping. You can pick and choose, go through the specials, order things, unorder things, and then right when it comes to the finale if you think no I don't need that, you can just remove it, without having to hand it to the checkout chick for her to put behind her already cramped quarters until the next staff member comes along to replace in the aisles all those things that good meaning shoppers have decided to return at the last minute.

Running a little late this year, but the advent calendar will be arriving tomorrow. As well as the ingredients for chocolate crackles. That will be Lexi and my little cooking adventure tomorrow. I have a veritable plethora of fresh fruit and vegies arriving too because I have decided we simply don't eat fresh veg enough, so went hard at the shopping there. Not insanely, but enough that I can make some nice salads and stir fries and vegie patties and whatnot. I have no idea what else I ordered - I guess that's part of the joy as well. You open each bag and think ooooh I forgot I ordered that! And lucky for me I have had three kids in quick succession so I have the cumulative affects of three baby brains all mooshed into one. Sensational. I have no hope.

My excitement for the grocery delivery is not hampered by the fact that it is still raining. A lot. I'm hoping I get some sleep tonight, although I also would like to get my first essay finished. I only have 300 words to go, and I'm actually not too disillusioned - I'm pretty happy with what I've done so far.

Do you ever hear words and think wow I never realised that? Like the first time I realised a supermarket was in fact a super market. Sawdust is actually saw dust. It's quite amazing that all these words that are so obviously obvious in their derivation can be swimming around in your mind and vocabulary and it will take some random mention for that word to develop an entirely new meaning.

I don't know how I'll go with the study and the kids tomorrow on day two of Cokelessness. Lucky I ordered 8 red bulls from woolies.....

Today is day one

of my abstinence from Coke. It just so happened that Angus awoke at 3.40am, was back down at around 4.15am give or take, and Tabitha woke up at 5am. Finally got her settled and managed to get back to sleep til around half 6. Massive sleep in! Still, I was searching for caffeine when I woke up and the first thing I did was go to the fridge. So I do think there is some habit there, not just all need. I have a coffee in front of me now, which is at least one form of caffeine, although I must say that the glass of water I also have beside it (I seem to have a need to have two different drinks on the go at once) is hardly as fulfilling as a Coke or a Red Bull might be. See I have a little loophole because I only said I was giving up Coke.....I have a Red Bull technicality.....not that I have any, but if I wanted one I could....

Lexi loves to draw. She got some new crayons yesterday, the schmicko Crayola ones with the bright colours. First crayon out of the box she hadn't even touched crayon to paper and his head fell off. It had obviously been broken somewhere along the line from factory to shop. Well, in the life of a two year old, there must be nothing sadder than a broken crayon. And when that crayon breaks while two out of your three children are asleep and the ramifications of that broken crayon rush to you in such an instant that you know instantly, before the crayon even falls to the floor, the enormity of sound that will be generated from the mouth of the hoping to draw child, you will do anything to prevent that occurring. So I leapt like a gazelle, instantly grabbing a crayon of comparable colour and putting it in her hand while stealthily removing the offending broken one, hoping to god that my slight of hand would be sufficient to avoid what would potentially be an earth shattering explosion of sound.

It did. Thanks in great part to my amazing powers of distraction. And a biscuit.

It's raining today. My goodness. What a surprise. Apparently we have had the wettest November on record. Hard to believe really, the duckpond, sorry horse paddock, barely looks different.

I wonder how many times the word mummy is uttered in a day? In this house I mean. Worldwide, holy moly, it defies thought the number of times it would be mentioned, whispered, screamed, cried, sobbed, laughed, yelled and the like. Well, so far we've had a fairly tame mummy morning. Lexi got up before Tabitha, which is a rarity, I grabbed brekky for her which she hooned through because her goal for the day is to obviously draw as much as she can. Because as I mentioned, she loves to draw.

I might count them one day. The mummy's I mean. Be very interesting. Tabitha says mummy with an upwards inflection at the end. Kind of like mummmEE? So I answer TabithAA. She gets a kick out of it. After half an hour or so I do find myself saying "Tabitha what do you want?" which is, I now realise, where Lexi got her "I want cheesecake" or "I want apple juice" from, each of which is now followed by a "PLEEEEEEEEEEASE" because she believes that please will get you what you want. What she fails to realise is that please doesn't necessarily get you what you want, however lack of please will definitely NOT get you what you want, so odds are better to chuck a please in there. Cluey little kids.

Well Tabitha counts up to ten now. And when we're singing three little ducks she holds up her fingers for the number of ducks that remain. She is one clever little chicken. 17 months old and her vocabulary is already far in advance of what I would even comprehend for a 2 year old. She rocks. Lexi rocks too, just in a different way. And Angus, well, he rocks too, but again, in a different way.

And so the day has begun, I'm slowly sucking the goodness (aka caffeine) out of this coffee and feeling my body wake up. I intended to crack the slowy out yesterday but methinks today is the day. Steak in the slowy. Sensational.

It's raining, it's pouring

but there ain't a soul snoring. Oh well, I guess it is 8.30am so it isn't snooze o'clock for anyone. Except possibly the old, so perhaps that's why they say the old man is snoring. There you go, just answered my own question.

My Coke fast has not yet commenced due to the fact that there still remains some of that wonderful brown fizzy goodness in the bottle in the fridge. I should have that polished off by the end of the day (the morning at this rate) though so then it is full steam ahead!!!

We had the best intentions of going out today. All three kidlets and myself. A friend very kindly volunteered to pick us up, pop the car seat into her car for Lexi and then myself, Tabitha and Angus would follow in my car. You see my car does not fit three car seats into it. So we are unable to go anywhere as a complete family unit. And yes, it does suck. Anyway, the amount of rain we have had overnight and this morning has seen my car perched on what appears to be a sandback arising from a lake. A lake whose level is constantly rising. And thus I made the executive decision that our first outing as a family (minus Mick who is working) would have to be postponed as I have not had practice in the logistical side of things in good weather let alone trying to negotiate everything in what is essentially a flooding downpour. Disappointing? Yes. Understandable? I think so.

I went out for dinner last night with a friend of mine, and no kidlets. It doesn't happen very often but when it does I revel in the time I have being a grown up. So we ordered our meals, I ordering a nice rare rib steak with mushroom sauce, my friend ordering a medium steak with Dianne sauce. When the meals were ready there was confusion. Both steaks had mushroom sauce. And looked identical. So which was the rare and which was the medium, and why did both have mushroom sauce? Ah yes, the eternal questions of life, I can see you would probably have had no sleep having been faced with a similar quandry.

Anyway, the waitress became incredibly confused, gave me some crackling (roast pork was on the menu, they had run out, and I all but begged them for some of the crackling and I think once they screwed up the meals they felt sorry for me so gave it to me so in the grand scheme of things I guess it wasn't such a bad thing) and then told the chef to remake the meals. I have realised I "talk" in very long sentences. Or very short ones. Sorry about that. Well, not really, it's the way it is. But yes, if you're getting frustrated I apologise. Although I'm not going to change so I guess I probably shouldn't apologise. So I won't. HA! Oh dear. I really haven't had enough sleep.

What was I talking about? Oh yes, the meals. They eventually arrived, again. For those of you who don't know, mushroom sauce and dianne sauce look quite similar. Save for the mushrooms. Now the first lot of meals, both steaks had mushrooms evident in the sauce. This second lot of meals neither steak had a mushroom in sight. Oh joy. Well, I ended up just tasting the sauce and it tasted like mushroom sauce, and the other one tasted horrifically garlicky so that was Dianne sauce. But no mushrooms. Kinda defeats the purpose of ordering mushroom sauce if you don't get any mushrooms.

Well I have set the girls up with a drawing pad and some crayons each. Mini dude just had a feed so is having a swing to work it off, and mummy is having a coffee with a Coke chaser. Cos I can. For now.

And so we sit here, listening to the sound of the rain on the tin roof. Ordinarily such a soothing sound. Now, in the wet season, a source of constant frustration. Will be interesting to see mr grocery delivery man try and negotiate the path to the front door......it's basically underwater..... poor bugger.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, because I know it is at the foremost part of everyone's thinking process, the ham at the deli at Woolies that is "all natural" ingredients does not taste like real ham. That is all.
